2020年に筑波大学で食料革新学の博士号を取得され、研究職を経て、2024年4月から横河電機株式会社で活躍されているモロッコ出身のメリエム ボウホウト氏に、日本に留学された経緯やご経験、キャリア形成、現在のお仕事について寄稿いただきました。

筑波大学卒業
Following my admission to the Tsukuba Life Science Innovation program, I received a scholarship under the JICA-SATREPS project, titled “Valorization of Bio-resources based on Scientific Evidence in Semi- and Arid Land for Creation of New Industry.” This marked the beginning of my journey in Japan in 2017, where I pursued my PhD studies at the Laboratory of Food Resources Engineering at the University of Tsukuba. My passion for the endemic Moroccan species, Agania spinosa, drove my research questions and I was determined to utilize the advanced technology and research knowledge learned from Japan to bring more value and foresee industrial application to Argan oil by-products, particularly the fruit residues with potential industrial applications not yet fully exploited.
In 2020, I obtained my PhD degree in Food Innovation from the University of Tsukuba. Alongside my doctoral degree, I also completed the Certificate Program on Nature Conservation, organized by the Degree Programs in the Comprehensive Human Sciences and the Life and Environmental Sciences. After graduation, I continued my research on Argania spinosa as Postdoctoral researcher under the Alliance for Research on the Mediterranean and North Africa (ARENA) at the University of Tsukuba. During this time, my research efforts resulted in multiple academic contributions, several publications in international journals and international conferences and the receipt of the First Young Researcher Award in the Doctorate Category from Morocco’s National Agency for the Development and Promotion of Argan Forest and Date Palm (ANDOZA), and the Moroccan Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests (MAPMDREF).
My work at the University of Tsukuba deepened my understanding of the important connection between research and solving social, environmental, and economic challenges in the real-world through sustainable development. It also made me realize the importance of fostering collaborations between Japan and Africa. Recognizing the significance of language as a cultural bridge, I embrace learning Japanese language daily. Mastering the language has not only enhanced my communication but also allowed me to engage more deeply with the Japanese culture and work environment.
In 2024, I made a significant transition into the industrial sector by joining Yokogawa Electric Corporation. This decision marked the beginning of a new chapter in my career, allowing me to apply my expertise in food innovation, technology, and research to a broader range of industrial applications. Working at Yokogawa offers me the opportunity to contribute to a company with a global presence and to connect Japanese culture and technology with Africa. Additionally, I am eager to challenge the traditional separation between industry and academia by fostering closer ties between these two worlds. In this new role, I view myself as a bridge-builder, using my scientific background, research experience, and knowledge of both Moroccan and Japanese cultures to create innovative solutions that benefit both continents. It is an honor and a great responsibility, but I am excited to take on the challenge.
